Created in collaboration with graphic artist Anthony Burrill, this exhibition installation was designed for the SHOUT exhibition at C-Mine in Genk, Belgium. Set within the former engine house of a historic coal mine, the project provides a bold yet simple framework for displaying Burrill's typographic artworks, creating a dialogue between contemporary graphic design and the site's powerful industrial heritage.
The installation responds to the contrast between Burrill's direct, legible visual language and the richly textured backdrop of the former power plant. Set within the turbine hall, the design occupies a compact space across two levels, allowing visitors to experience the work from both above and below. A simple geometric framework, combined with a carefully considered use of colour, creates a playful sequence of spaces that shifts in scale as visitors move through the exhibition.
The installation was realised using a restrained palette of readily available materials including timber, paint, paper and ink. The resulting intervention sits lightly within the historic fabric, allowing the existing machinery and architecture to remain prominent while providing a vibrant setting for the artwork. The project creates an engaging exhibition that celebrates both the work on display and the character of its remarkable setting.
