Green Rooms transforms a prominent Art Deco building in Wood Green into the UK's first social enterprise hotel, creating an affordable place for artists to live, work and collaborate while re-establishing a destination for the local community. Supported by the Greater London Authority and Haringey Council, the project brings together hospitality, culture and social enterprise within a revitalised historic building.
The design celebrates the building's distinctive Art Deco character through a restrained architectural approach that reveals rather than competes with the existing fabric. Original features have been carefully restored and complemented by simple contemporary interventions, allowing the architecture to remain the defining feature. Minimal detailing and a pared-back material palette create calm, flexible spaces that support a diverse community of visiting artists and creative practitioners while respecting the building's historic identity.
The ground floor has been opened up to create a public café, bar and restaurant with a new outdoor social space that encourages interaction between guests and the wider neighbourhood. Above, twenty hotel rooms are complemented by long-stay apartments, communal dormitories and shared creative spaces. At the top of the building, restored stained-glass rooflights illuminate a bespoke handcrafted bar and events venue, providing a distinctive setting for exhibitions, performances and gatherings. Together, these interventions transform a once-underused building into a vibrant cultural hub where hospitality, creativity and community come together under one roof.
