The design draws inspiration from the existing architectural fabric and the building's former public role, developing a design centred around the themes of civic life, renewal, romance, discovery and wonder. Rather than competing with the historic interiors, new interventions have been conceived as carefully placed objects that sit comfortably within the original spaces. Existing terrazzo and mosaic floors, stained-glass windows and decorative architectural features are complemented by a rich palette and softly patinated materials, creating spaces that feel timeless and atmospheric.

The project was designed from night to day rather than day to night, ensuring each space retains its character throughout changing patterns of occupation. Moments of drama unfold through the sequence of circulation spaces, bars and event venues, culminating in the restored ballroom and former council chamber, whose remarkable craftsmanship provides a distinctive setting for contemporary hospitality. Together, these carefully considered interventions reveal the enduring character of the building while giving one of Fulham's most significant civic landmarks a vibrant new public life.
