The revitalisation of Elsley House creates a warm workspace for Great Portland Estates within a 1920s Art Deco building on Great Titchfield Street. The project is centred around the idea of the hearth, drawing on the building’s connection to Thomas Elsley, a celebrated local metalwork fabricator known for his craftsmanship and decorative Dutch fireplace tiles.
This concept becomes an organising principle for the workplace, placing moments of gathering, pause and conversation at the heart of each floor. Tea points are positioned as contemporary hearths, with communal seating, blue-stained timber and warm timber finishes creating spaces that feel generous and inviting. Translucent curtains define different areas without interrupting the open-plan character of the floors, allowing workspaces to move naturally between focused, collaborative and social settings.
The material language draws directly from Elsley’s legacy and the building’s Art Deco character. Exposed brickwork reflects the site’s workshop heritage, while Crittall banding echoes the original external window frames. In-house designed rugs reference Elsley’s Dutch tilework, while scalloped furniture, powder-coated aluminium shelving and dark navy accents nod to his decorative metalwork. Outside, the courtyard takes on a more expressive character, with patterned tiles, planting and Art Deco-inspired furniture creating a green oasis in central London.
